On Friday morning, after her doctor’s appointment, Kyra stopped by the pastor’s office at the church where she’d grown up.

When she walked in, her dad pushed away the stack of correspondence he’d been reading and got straight to the point. “What did the doctor say?”

“They ran another MRI.” She made a face. Lying in the tube with the top pressing in toward her face wasn’t her favorite activity. Not being able to move reminded her too much of the hours beneath the tornado rubble. But she’d gotten through without a panic attack, something she hadn’t managed in the early days of the injury. “Dr. Jacobson only saw the preliminary report, but he thought everything looked good. Great, even.”

“Glad to hear it.” His smile lit up his eyes. Eyes the same nondescript hazel color as hers, though his hair was fair where hers was red like her grandmother’s. “How goes the nanny job?”

A picture rose in her head of Wade, his face in shadows, his fingers touching her cheek.

She felt a hint of a blush heating her neck. “The triplets are wonderful, Dad. Benjamin finally cut his molar, but now I think Caden’s is trying to come through. And Abby is starting to say actual words. Yesterday, Wade walked into the house and she yelled, ‘Dad!’ It was so cute.”

Those hazel eyes contemplated her face for a long moment as Dad leaned his elbows on his desk and clasped his hands together. “You’re enjoying them.”

“Yes, of course. You know how I feel about kids.”

“But these are special. I hear it in your voice every time we talk.”

Though they texted often, their real conversations came in person on weekends.

“They’re precious, innocent babies who need all the love anyone can give them. They’re adorable and funny and energetic and exhausting.” She laughed. “Watching them explore the world is a gift. Yesterday, Benjamin shared his pancake with me, and that boy does not like to share.”

Her insides warmed at the sweet, sticky memory.

“Are you getting too attached, honey, considering your plan to teach again in the fall?”

“It’s hard not to, Dad. I worry how Wade will manage once I leave. He’s trying to find another nanny, but Sundown Valley is a small town.”

“So you’re getting along well with the children’s father, too? You feel safe there?”

“Very safe.” She didn’t mention the problems with the Kenos. “You should drive down sometime and meet Wade and spend the day with me. He’s a good Christian man, Dad, a hard worker with a good head on his shoulders. He’s wonderful with his babies, and I’m told he was very active with his church’s youth before the triplets were born. I think you’ll like him.”

Her dad’s gaze rested on her again, discerning. “Sounds like you are also getting attached to the babies’ dad.”

Kyra and her parents had always been close, but during her recovery, the relationship between her and her dad had deepened. Sharing her concerns with him was second nature.

“I’m not sure. Maybe. Probably. I like him a lot.
